Short answer: not always. If your restaurant or cafe mainly needs good posts every week, you can do it yourself, use a scheduler, or use a done-for-you service such as Suara (trysuara.com). If you need someone to reply to comments and messages, run paid ads, film Reels, or handle events and influencers, a social media manager (a staff hire, a freelancer or an agency) is the better fit.
What a social media manager does
The UK National Careers Service describes a full-time job of 38 to 45 hours a week: planning campaigns, making content including video clips and reels, responding to customer feedback, and analysing results.
A single restaurant often needs only part of that list.
When a manager is the better choice
- Comments and messages pile up. Bookings, complaints and allergy questions need quick replies from someone who knows the menu.
- You want paid ads. Budgets, audiences and weekly checks are a skill of their own.
- You need Reels and video. Someone has to film at the venue and edit.
- You run events, launches or influencer work. These need planning and follow-up every week.
- You have several locations. A group brand needs one person or team holding it together.
When you probably don't need one
You have one location, the gap is regular good posts, you have photos on your phone, and someone on the team answers comments.
The options side by side
| Option | Who makes the posts | Replies, ads, video | Fits when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | You | You | You have the time |
| Scheduler app | You, the app posts | You | You like making posts |
| Done-for-you service, such as Suara | The service, from your photos | Not included | Posts are the gap |
| Freelancer | One person | If agreed | One venue |
| Staff hire | Your employee | Yes | Several venues |
| Agency | A team | Yes | Launches, paid campaigns |

What a manager costs
Costs depend on your city and how much of the job you hand over. Published figures:
- Staff hire, United States. PayScale puts the average social media manager base salary at US$61,083 a year, with the 10th to 90th percentile running from US$41,000 to US$88,000 (2,285 salary profiles).
- Staff hire, United Kingdom. The National Careers Service gives £25,000 a year for a starter and £50,000 for an experienced manager.
- Freelancers, worldwide on Upwork. Upwork Insights, an independent index, found a median advertised rate of US$25 an hour, the middle half asking US$17 to US$35 (88 profiles). Upwork adds a client fee.
- Agencies and freelancers, United States. WebFX, a US agency, says monthly packages from an agency or freelancer cost US$500 to US$5,000 a month.
For local figures, see How much does a social media manager cost in Malaysia? and How much does social media management cost in Canada? Suara's homepage lists one plan: RM599 a month in Malaysia, CA$199 in Canada and US$149 everywhere else.
Can you mix them?
Yes. A service or scheduler can cover weekly posts while a freelancer handles a launch, an event or ads by the hour.
When Suara is not the right fit
- You want comments, messages or paid ads handled. Suara's list of what is included covers posts, Stories, posting and a weekly report, not replies or ads.
- You need new video filmed. Suara works from your own photos and clips. Clips can be carousel slides and Stories; single Reels are listed as coming soon.
- You want posts to go out unchecked. Nothing is posted until you tap Approve.
- You need a new design in minutes. Caption edits and simple fixes are quick. New designs come back later.
How Suara helps
Suara is done for you: share your Instagram or website, and Suara makes a week of posts every week from your own photos, in your look and voice. Each post comes to you in a Telegram chat, and nothing is posted until you approve it. Your first week is free. Start your free week. A weekly report every Sunday shows how each post did, so you can judge whether posts alone are enough before you hire.
Questions
Can a small cafe run its own Instagram without a manager?
Yes, if someone has a few hours a week to make posts and reply to comments. If those hours are missing, a done-for-you service can take over the posting.
Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency?
Not always. Rates vary by city, experience and scope, and WebFX gives one shared monthly range for both. Get written quotes for the same tasks.
Will a done-for-you service reply to my comments and messages?
No. Suara makes your posts and posts them after you approve them. Replies stay with you, your team or a manager you hire.
Is a social media manager worth it for paid ads?
Usually, yes. Ads need budgets, audiences and weekly checks of results, a skill that is hard to learn during service.
